Summer of climate catastrophes brings risks for workers

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 12:51:55 GMT

(The Hill) - In a summer filled with heat waves, fires, smoke and floods, workers face the brunt of climate-related catastrophes. Many workers have worked inside or outside in scorching heat or while breathing in smoke, putting them as risk for illness or even death. Heat deaths have killed dozens of workers each year, a total of more than 400 between 2011 and 2021, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And as climate change is expected to worsen, so too may these impacts. While heat risk isn’t new, “it’s certainly getting worse with climate change and as temperature and other factors really have exacerbated the issue,” said Rebecca Reindel, director of occupational safety and health at the AFL-CIO, the largest federation labor unions. For weeks, the southern and western U.S has sweltered under brutal heat from the combination of human-caused climate change and an unusually stable heat dome hovering above the Texas-Mexico borderlands. Those conditions have pushed ...

Bulls get some good news from the NBA this week

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 12:51:55 GMT

CHICAGO — It may not make a massive impact on a team looking to take a step forward with essentially the same core in 2023-2024, but it will allow them to make an addition to their roster. This is thanks to a move concerning a Bulls' point guard who isn't expected to play this fall and winter. This week, the NBA granted the designated player exception for Lonzo Ball after it was approved by the league's "Fitness to Play" panel. So what does this mean for the Bulls? They can add another player to their roster ahead of the 2023-2024 season without it impacting their salary cap. There are some restrictions, however, as they look to add this person only for this season due to the designated player exception rules. The Bulls can sign a free agent for one season at 50 percent of Ball's salary ($10.2 million). They could also trade for or claim a player in the final year of his contract should that person's salary be at or under $10.2 million plus 100,000, per the rules of the NBA Collective B...

Nearly 150 people died of fentanyl overdoses in Denver in the first six months of 2023, and the city’s public health agency asked people who are going to use drugs to take precautions. The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment reported 228 overdoses in the first half of the year, including 146 that involved fentanyl — a 16% increase in deaths attributed to the potent opioid compared the same time period in 2022.It’s possible those numbers could rise as investigations into recent deaths continue. In 2022, 453 people died of overdoses in Denver, including 244 that involved fentanyl. The Denver health department said law enforcement has reported increased availability of fentanyl powder, and that pills sold illegally have had a higher fentanyl content recently. Because fentanyl is so much more potent than heroin and other opioids, a small increase in consumption could cause an overdose, the department said.So far, Denver hasn’t reported any overdoses i...

Opinion: Can all that empty office space be converted to condos and appartments?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 12:51:55 GMT

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more companies have offered remote work options for their employees, or have even switched to working entirely remotely – leaving empty office buildings a new fixture in many cities. In July 2023, Boston’s Planning and Development Agency announced a pilot program to offer incentives to building developers who convert office buildings to residential housing. As engineers who study buildings, we wanted to know if these empty spaces could be converted to residential buildings, and what hurdles developers would face. While converting office buildings to multi-family residential involves many considerations – including zoning codes, real estate values, and structural issues – certain buildings may be good candidates for this type of conversion. Here’s what it would take to remodel these spaces.Redefining spaceFirst off, the building owners wouldn’t need to make any major structural changes to convert an office building to a residential building.
