Son detained at airport after 'skip lagging' flight hack, father says

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:24:42 GMT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) - The purchased flight was from Gainesville, Florida to New York City with a layover in Charlotte, North Carolina. The plan was for Hunter Parsons' teenage son to get off the plane in Charlotte, where he lives, and not continue to New York City. The practice — booking whole flights but getting off at the layover — is frowned upon in the airline industry. It's known as hidden city ticketing, point beyond ticketing, and skip lagging. And even though Parsons says his family has used skip lagging resource Skip Lagged for the past five to eight years, he says he never would have put his son in this predicament if he knew what would happen. Will El Niño make airplane turbulence worse? Hunter says that once at the airport in Florida with his North Carolina driver's license, the gate agent was skeptical of his son's final destination.According to Parsons, his son was "interrogated a little bit" before being "taken to a security room." "They kind of got out of him tha...

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Air traffic controller staffing for the tower at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has "already fallen behind the rapid increase of air traffic within our airspace," according to a memo sent to regional air traffic control representatives. Just last month, the CEO for United Airlines blamed such staffing shortages - which are occurring nationwide - for recent delays that plagued various airlines.A spokesperson for AUS said air traffic control shortages impact airline operations more than airport operations. Airport operations include monitoring airport roadways, the airfield and parking versus things like flight schedules.Air traffic controllers communicate with pilots within 40 miles of the airport. Crews in the tower According to the air traffic control staffing memo obtained by KXAN, the tower has seen "unprecedented growth in air traffic over the last two years," and staffers are "working mostly six-day workweeks" to keep up. Groundbreaking for The Heights development in St. Paul in advance of soil remediation

For some 40 years or more, the Hillcrest Country Club in St. Paul used mercury to control fungus along its golf course fairways, greens and tee boxes. Bolander Construction will soon begin removing soil running at least six inches deep in those locations, and up to one and a half feet of contaminated dirt along the greens, to prep the land for up to 1,000 new housing units and 1,000 new jobs.Environmental engineers with Braun Intertec will then test the soil, and if necessary, more dirt removal will follow. That’s step one of many.
