How Loudoun Co. is responding to rise in student overdoses Amid a controversy about whether Loudoun County Public School officials in Virginia notified parents about suspected student overdoses quickly enough, some parents say they were told about the incidents and praised the way school leaders handled them.In a news release earlier this week, Sheriff Mike Chapman said there have been at least eight opioid overdoses of Park View High School students, including seven that have been reported in the last three weeks. Chapman said Thursday there was a ninth incident involving a Park View student this week.Concerns about the notification process prompted Gov. Glenn Youngkin to intervene Wednesday, issuing an executive order to tell all parents about “school-connected” overdoses within 24 hours. But Amy Gazes, the school’s parent-teacher association president, said Principal Jason Jefferson has been communicative about the incidents.“Every time this has happened, we get an email from him,” Gazes said. “It stat...

Chargers WR Keenan Allen, “one of the greats,” closes in on 10,000 yards receiving COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Keenan Allen has never been the biggest, strongest or fastest wide receiver during his 11 seasons in the NFL.It isn’t physical traits alone that have put Allen on the verge of becoming the 54th player in NFL history with 10,000 yards receiving, 70 yards away from becoming the second to produce it all for the Los Angeles Chargers.“You know, he really plays the receiver position as an art form, and I think that when you play it like him, what makes Keenan special ages well the older you get,” Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said Thursday.Considering Allen has put up 70 yards or more in 63 of his 133 regular-season games with the Chargers (3-4), there is a good chance he will join the club against the New York Jets (4-3) on Monday night. To do it against one of the best passing defenses in the game, he will have to show the great hands, technical expertise and spacial awareness that have made Allen a model of consistency and quiet greatness.“His physical gi...

Trump asks appeals court to lift gag order imposed on him in 2020 election interference case Former President Donald Trump asked a federal appeals court on Thursday to lift a gag order restricting his speech about potential witnesses, prosecutors and court staff in the case that accuses him of scheming to overturn his 2020 election loss.Trump’s attorneys urged the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to block the gag order ruling from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan while the former president pursues his appeals. “The Gag Order violates the First Amendment rights of President Trump and over 100 million Americans who listen to him,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in court papers. Chutkan, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, reimposed the gag order on Sunday after denying Trump’s request to let him speak freely while he challenges the restrictions in higher courts. The order bars Trump from making public statements targeting special counsel Jack Smith and his team, court employees and possible witnesses. It does not prohibit Trump from airing general co...

James Harden determined to fit in on Clippers’ loaded roster after messy Philadelphia exit LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even more than his stints in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, James Harden believes he has much more to prove in joining the Los Angeles Clippers. Not only is Harden back home in Southern California, but he joins a loaded roster that already features Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook. While the “Big Three” of Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving didn’t work in Brooklyn and teaming up with Joel Embiid in Philadelphia ended with some rancor, Harden says he is determined to do his part to see that this “Core Four” can win an NBA title.“I’m very elite as an individual and then I can fit in with anybody and make a championship run work,” Harden said Thursday after practice at the team’s facility. “I think all of us are on the same page in the sense of the individual stats and all those things are past us and we all got one goal and I think everybody knows what that is.”It was Harden’s first comments since the trade happened late M...

Big 12 all tied up going into November, with Red River rivals among 5-way tie for league lead

Big 12 all tied up going into November, with Red River rivals among 5-way tie for league lead The Big 12 championship game could still turn into a farewell party for seventh-ranked Texas and No. 10 Oklahoma, and one more meeting of the Red River rivals before changing leagues next year. But while the Longhorns (7-1, 4-1, No. 7 CFP) and Sooners (7-1, 4-1, No. 9 CFP) begin November tied for the Big 12 lead, the Southeastern Conference-bound teams aren’t alone atop the standings. They are part of a five-way tie with defending Big 12 champ and No. 25 Kansas State (6-2, 4-1), Oklahoma State (6-2, 4-1) and Iowa State (5-3, 4-1). “We’re starting to find that I think our league is probably a little stronger than people give it credit for in early September … and maybe some of these other leagues aren’t quite as strong,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “Our league is tough.”No other FBS league has such a logjam at the top of the standings. The closest is the American Athletic Conference with a three-way tie. The SEC and the Big Ten both have two teams without a le...
