King Charles to attend COP28 King Charles III will attend the COP28 climate summit in Dubai next month, Buckingham Palace confirmed. The King — a longstanding advocate of bolder action to combat climate change — will deliver the opening address at the World Climate Action Summit, the gathering of global leaders which will open the two-week annual conference. It will be the first time he has attended a COP summit as King. Having played a major diplomatic role as Prince of Wales at the U.K.-hosted COP26 in 2021, there was confusion last year as to whether he would attend the COP27 summit in Egypt. Downing Street eventually confirmed that he would not go as it was not the “right occasion.” This year, the King will attend “at the invitation” of UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and “at the request” of the U.K. government, Buckingham Palace said. He will speak at the summit on Friday 1 December and will “take the opportunity to have meetings with regional leaders” ahead of the event, according to a stat...

New oil leak reported after a ferry that ran aground repeatedly off the Swedish coast is pulled free STOCKHOLM (AP) — A ferry that ran aground off southeastern Sweden and leaked oil into the Baltic Sea was pulled free Wednesday and anchored nearby, the Swedish Coast Guard said, adding that a new oil leak had been discovered. It was unclear how much oil had been leaked as Marco Polo, operated by TT-Line of Germany, was freed from its third grounding. Authorities said the spill currently stretches over 5 kilometers (3 miles) out at sea.The plan was to inspect the ferry’s hull and pump out the remaining oil while anchored at sea. Earlier, Sweden’s coast guard said it had suffered “extensive damage” and would eventually be tugged into the Swedish harbor of Karlshamn. On Oct. 22, Marco Polo was running between Trelleborg and Karlshamn when it touched ground, sustained damage and started leaking. It continued under its own power before grounding a second time. On Sunday, it slipped off the ground because of severe weather, drifted further out, got stuck for a third time and leaked m...

Why travelers expecting sticker shock could see sweet relief instead Dining out is more expensive than ever. The cost of gas is rising again. And the price of travel — including airfare and hotels — has kept pace. Right? Not exactly. Airfare costs declined by 13% between September 2022 and September 2023, according to September 2023 Consumer Price Index data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Far from being an inflationary force, travel prices have actually helped cool overall prices this year. Yet this seems to fly in the face of many travelers’ expectations.“I keep hearing the narrative that it’s so expensive to travel,” says Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper, a travel booking platform. “In reality we’re seeing lower prices, for domestic trips especially.”Travel prices have fluctuated so often since 2019 that it makes sense if recent price drops haven’t registered for many travelers. And while airfare has decreased in recent months below 2019 levels, other expenses such as dining out and renting a car remain above their pre-pandemic baseline.Pu...
