Huge dam proposed for Santa Clara County hit with new setback

In the latest stumble for plans to build a massive $2.8 billion dam in Southern Santa Clara County near Pacheco Pass, a judge has ruled that the Santa Clara Valley Water District violated state environmental laws over the dam’s preliminary geological work. The ruling could lead to further delays on the project, which is proposed to be the largest new dam constructed in the Bay Area since 1998, when Los Vaqueros Reservoir in Contra Costa County was built. The district, based in San Jose, is seeking to build a 320-foot-high earthen dam on the North Fork of Pacheco Creek in the rugged canyons about 2 miles north of Highway 152 near the border of Henry W. Coe State Park. The district hopes to take water it now stores nearby in the massive San Luis Reservoir and pipe it to a new Pacheco reservoir, filling it during wet years. But the project has faced major hurdles and may never be built. It has tripled in cost since 2018 due to unstable geology found in the area. It has seen its const...TikTok sues Montana over law banning the app

By Amy Beth Hanson | Associated PressHELENA, Mont. — Social media company TikTok Inc. filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to overturn Montana’s first-in-the-nation ban on the video sharing app, arguing the law is an unconstitutional violation of free speech rights and is based on “unfounded speculation” that the Chinese government could access users’ data. The lawsuit by TikTok itself follows one filed last week by five content creators who made the same arguments, including that the state of Montana has no authority to take action on matters of national security. Both lawsuits were filed in federal court in Missoula.Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the bill Wednesday and the content creators’ lawsuit was filed hours later. The law is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1.TikTok has not shared and would not share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and has taken measures to protect the privacy and security of its users, including storing all U.S. use...Kurtenbach: Super Bowl 60 is coming to the Bay and San Jose — not San Francisco — should host

Santa Clara is going to host another Super Bowl. And this time, it should host the whole week’s worth of festivities. On Monday, NFL owners awarded Levi’s Stadium Super Bowl 60, to be played in Feb. 2026. It’s a bit of a surprise that the Big Game is returning to the Bay, as Super Bowl 50, held back in 2016, left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.Bad planning, bad traffic, bad weather (the sun was out, toasting upper-deck fans), and a downright awful game all led to the widespread belief that Levi’s Stadium’s first Super Bowl would be its last.Surely, the 49ers and the NFL will try to fix the mistakes of that Super Bowl week. But the easiest solution isn’t using Chase Center or Oracle Park for events this time — it’s hosting the week’s ever-growing list of festivities near the stadium.Super Bowl LX should be the Silicon Valley Super Bowl, the San Jose Fiesta, the South Bay Celebration.Sign installers continue dolling up Levi’s...Why Shania Twain decided to do this one thing differently each show

As Shania Twain was coming up with song ideas for a new album, she wanted to create something to uplift her own mood. The COVID-19 pandemic had just hit, and as she was hunkered down at home, she felt inspired to “put a little up in my giddy,” said Twain during a recent phone interview. The end result was the single “Giddy Up!” off of her sixth studio album, “Queen of Me,” which dropped earlier this year. (KRON) -- Glen Kuiper will no longer be announcing Oakland A's games after he used a racial slur during a broadcast on May 5, NBC Sports Bay Area confirmed on Monday. Kuiper used the word when describing a trip to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. He claimed that his words “didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to” when he used the "n-word" instead of saying "Negro Leagues." A’s reach second ‘binding agreement’ for stadium site in Vegas “Following an internal review, the decision has been made for NBC Sports California to end its relationship with Glen Kuiper, effective immediately,” the network said in a statement to the Associated Press. “We thank Glen for his dedication to Bay Area baseball over the years.”According to the AP, “the decision was based on a variety of factors, including information uncovered in the internal review.” That quote came from an anonymous source who did not reveal specific details. He was 82.U.S. Speedskating said in a statement posted on social media Monday that McDermott died early Saturday surrounded by his family. It did not immediately specify where the Michigan native died or give a cause.McDermott was an apprentice barber and unheralded figure on the speedskating scene when he stunningly won the 500-meter event at the Innsbruck Games, upsetting two-time reigning Olympic champion Yevgeny Grishin of the Soviet Union by a half-second.“The Cold War was going on and it carried over into the Olympics. The Russians came along in ’56 and dominated every sport. It was awful hard to beat them in anything,” McDermott said in a 2010 interview with MLive Media Group. “So, going against them, you tried a little harder.”McDermott’s gold was the only victory by any U.S. athletes at the Innsbruck Games. MILAN (AP) — A bad day for Juventus turned worse when a 4-1 loss at Empoli on Monday saw its hopes of qualifying for the Champions League implode. Before kickoff, Juventus was hit by a 10-point penalty for false accounting. That dropped the club to seventh in Serie A, five points behind fourth-placed AC Milan. Juve hosts Milan next weekend in one of its final two matches.“It was a mental collapse which is normal after a surreal season,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “At this point it’s enough, it’s one thing after the other. They (league organizers) need to decide once and for all where we are.“The guys did their best. It’s not an excuse, but finding yourself with 10 points less, a quarter of an hour before the match is at least mitigating circumstances. It’s been a really tiring year, always going back and forth. And on the field, we’re second.”Another route into the Champions League ended last week in a loss to Sevilla after extra time in their Europa League semifinal.D...Newcastle qualifies for Champions League for first time in 20 years

NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Newcastle qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years after drawing with Leicester 0-0 in the English Premier League on Monday, a milestone moment for a Saudi-controlled club with the resources and ambition to become a major force in European soccer. The point ensured Newcastle cannot be denied a top-four finish heading into its final game of the season, at Chelsea on Sunday.Leicester’s campaign-closing game has far more riding on it, with the team still in the relegation zone and needing a win at home to West Ham to avoid falling into the second-tier Championship — seven years after winning the Premier League at preseason odds of 5,000-1 in a sporting fairytale.Newcastle swarmed all over Leicester at St. James’ Park, hitting the post on three occasions — through Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Bruno Guimaraes — and forcing a series of saves from goalkeeper Daniel Iversen.Still, it was job done for Newcastle, which was last in Europe’...Latest news
