Opinion: A regional tax could solve Colorado’s child-care crisis The child-care crisis just keeps getting worse.“The child-care system is broken in this country. Families can’t afford the high cost. Child-care providers cannot sustain their businesses. Caregivers’ wages are still below self-sufficiency standards,” said Colorado’s Bell Policy Center, which did a deep dive into the subject. In other words, little about the child-care crisis has changed in three years, with pandemic effects still looming. It’s a vicious cycle: Many parents left the workforce during the pandemic in order to stay home and take care of their children. They still haven’t returned to work. That deeply affects our nation’s economy. The lack of enough affordable, accessible and quality child care prevents America from performing at the level it should, which pushes up inflation rates.  The Hill publication said affordable child care is key to getting people back to work. It’s one of the top reasons why workers, particularly women, are not just leaving but also staying out of t...

Military hospital chided for shift in Catholic pastoral care By DAVID CRARY (AP National Writer)The management of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center has drawn criticism from a prominent archbishop — and some members of Congress — by choosing not to renew a contract for Franciscan priests to provide pastoral care, and instead hiring a secular firm to oversee provision of those services going forward. For nearly two decades, priests from the Holy Name College Friary in Silver Spring, Maryland, had ministered to service members and veterans hospitalized at Walter Reed, a renowned medical facility in nearby Bethesda.Walter Reed said it notified the Franciscans in March that their contract would not be renewed, and that another bidder for the new contract had been selected — secular defense contractor Mack Global LLC.The medical center said it issued a cease-and-desist order on April 4 — in the midst of Holy Week — when Franciscans continued to provide pastoral services after their contract expired on March 3...

West Marin residents create distillery named after Tomales Bay fence Conceived in West Marin, the Elk Fence Distillery is named after a Tomales Bay fence built to keep native tule elk from eating non-native crops. It’s about as West Marin as you can get, except for one thing: It’s in Santa Rosa. When co-founders and co-distillers Gail Coppinger and Scott Woodson originally went to the Marin Civic Center and asked what it would take to open a distillery in Marin County, they were met with blank stares. They made their dreams come true anyway. The two met working in the trades — Coppinger is a shingler, and Woodson is a painter — and bonded over his love of homebrewing and her love of cooking (she’s a former professional cook). One summer night in 2014, they got together in Woodson’s garage in Inverness.“We made a mash together,” says Coppinger, of Point Reyes Station. “I loved the smell and the chemistry.”By that time, Woodson, a former barley grower, had already started to look beyond brewing.“I started reading about distilling,” he says, “...

'You want to go outside?': Antioch mayor blows up at contentious city council meeting (KRON) -- Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe can be clearly heard asking an attendee at a city council meeting Tuesday if they "want to go outside." One of the key topics on discussion at the heated Antioch City Council meeting on Tuesday were racist text messages allegedly sent by officers with the Antioch Police Department.According to the Contra Costa County District Attorney, which investigated the text messages with help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, APD officers allegedly sent the racist text messages while discussing suspects they were investigating. Beniers grows from rookie to leader for playoff-bound Kraken SEATTLE (AP) — The cameo Matty Beniers made last year during the disappointing debut season of the Seattle Kraken provided an optimistic glimmer of what a full season with the young center on the ice could mean for the young franchise. Being in the conversation for the Calder Trophy as top rookie? That was expected. Helping lead the Kraken to a playoff berth in Year 2? That was a surprise. “What he brings to the team every single night is unique, is special. He works really hard. He does the right thing every single night and that’s why he’s so consistent in his game,” Seattle teammate Yanni Gourde said. “And consistency is tough. I think it’s the toughest part, especially as a rookie coming through in your first year.”Beniers has turned out to be one of the missing pieces for Seattle and its hungry fans, who can now look forward to playoff hockey. Seattle will close out the regular season Thursday night against Vegas and then open its first postseason, rekindling memories and hopes...
