California to vote on ambitious locomotive emission rule

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Every day, locomotives pull rail cars filled with food, lumber, oil and other products through railyards near neighborhoods in Oakland, Commerce, San Bernadino and other California cities. They run on diesel, a more powerful fuel than gasoline, and burning all that diesel produces pollution that is harmful for people who live nearby, as well as greenhouse gases. California’s Air Resources Board is trying to change that. The agency votes Thursday on a rule that would ban the use of locomotive engines more than 23 years old by 2030 and increase the use of zero-emissions technology to transport freight from ports and throughout railyards. The rule would also ban locomotives in the state from idling longer than 30 minutes if they are equipped with an automatic shutoff. The rule would be the most ambitious of its kind in the country.“It’s going to be groundbreaking, and it’s going to address the diesel crisis that’s been poisoning communitie...Barclays: Q1 Earnings Snapshot

After first 100 days, Lierman hopeful about modernization of Md. comptroller’s office, possibilities for state policy changes

That is a broad mandate in our Constitution.”“…So that means, yes, we are the revenue administrator — which is a nicer way of saying ‘tax collector,'” Lierman grinned. “But it’s also about how we spend our money. This agency sees every dollar in and every dollar out of our state government.”In addition to being determined to modernize the state’...Sanofi: Q1 Earnings Snapshot

BERLIN (AP) — Five matches for a “salad bowl.”The Bundesliga title race looks set to go to the final day of the season with only one point separating league leader Borussia Dortmund and 10-time defending champion Bayern Munich. The winner will receive the “Meisterschale” (champion’s bowl), which is commonly referred to as the “salad bowl” because of its appearance. In recent years, Bayern has usually had the bowl in the bag by now. With the exception of 2019, the title race hasn’t been this close at this stage since 2010, when Louis van Gaal’s Bayern team had just taken a one-point lead over Schalke with a 2-1 win over the then-league leaders in Gelsenkirchen. This time, the Bavarian powerhouse is in the unaccustomed role of being a point behind.Bayern enjoyed a 4-2 win over Dortmund in Munich on April 1 but has been misfiring since. It was one of only two wins Bayern has managed in seven games in all competitions since Thomas Tuchel was appointed coach. The decision to fire his predece...Prince William County property taxes to stay flat in new budget

Due to rising assessments, the average homeowner’s tax bill will be the same.At the same time, the board agreed to increase the so-called “data center tax” on business computer equipment and peripherals — a tax paid by all businesses but disproportionately by data centers — to $2.15 per $100, well above the $1.80 rate called for in an increase schedule approved by the board in 2021.The new fiscal year begins July 1.B...Latest news
