Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:40:42 GMT

Dave Hovis and his friends hardly noticed the advisories for strong wind gusts from Hurricane Dora passing far off shore earlier this week as they enjoyed a relaxing vacation in a friend’s waterfront home at Baby Beach in Maui. The next day, they were ramming through a gate to escape the deadly wildfire that destroyed the nearby resort town of Lahaina.“We were just hanging out in the pool and, like, boom! All this wind hit,” Hovis, 32, a San Francisco technology startup company manager, said Thursday in a telephone interview with the Bay Area News Group as he boarded a plane back to the Bay Area. “But the hurricane was 600 miles south so we thought, no big deal.”On Monday, Hovis, vacationing with four others this week at a friend’s home on the island, said they secured the inflatable pool floats and other loose items and didn’t think much more about it. By Devan Cole and Ariana de Vogue | CNNThe Supreme Court on Thursday blocked Purdue Pharma from going forward with bankruptcy proceedings, which the Biden administration has called an “unprecedented” arrangement that would ultimately offer the Sackler family broad protection from opioid-related civil claims. In agreeing to pause the settlement, the court also said it would take up the case and hear arguments this December. The case arose after the reorganization in bankruptcy of OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharma – stemming from litigation arising from claims over its role in fueling the opioid addiction crisis.Until recently, Purdue was controlled by the Sackler family, who withdrew billions of dollars from the company before it filed for bankruptcy. The family has now agreed to contribute up to $6 billion to Purdue’s reorganization fund on the condition that the Sacklers receive a release from civil liability. The government, representing the US Trustee, has called the plan “except...

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A coalition of homeless advocates and civil rights attorneys released a list of demands for the City of San Francisco to settle a lawsuit that forbids police from forcing homeless residents off public property. The letter sent to City Attorney David Chiu on Thursday offers a proposed settlement to resolve the lawsuit, Coalition on Homelessness v. City of San Francisco. A U.S. District Court judge found in favor of the plaintiffs in the underlying lawsuit last year, and the court issued an injunction against San Francisco."At its heart, San Francisco’s homelessness crisis is an affordable housing crisis," said Cynthia Castillo, Policy Advocate of the Western Center on Law and Poverty. "Instead of ensuring that Californians without housing have universal access to a safe, permanent, and affordable place to live, harassment tactics continue to displace and segregate unhoused people.
